Haikarasan Ikkanbari Basket Bag – Japanese Indigo Blue | Vintage Showa Collage
A one-of-a-kind basket carrying fragments of memories from Showa-era Japan.
This Haikarasan Ikkanbari Basket Bag is handcrafted using Ikkanbari, a traditional Japanese technique of layering washi paper over a bamboo basket.
For this piece, I first hand-dyed the washi paper with Japanese indigo, creating the beautiful variations of deep blue that form the background of the basket.
Over the indigo-dyed washi, I collaged a collection of vintage Japanese labels, advertisements, nostalgic illustrations, typography, and kimono fabric, mainly from the Showa era.
Charming characters, old product advertisements, colorful graphics, and forgotten pieces of everyday Japanese design come together to create a new story.
Every side of the basket has a different composition, so its character changes depending on the angle from which you see it.
The natural variations and uneven tones of the indigo are part of the beauty of hand dyeing. The vintage materials may also carry fading, marks, or signs of age—traces of the lives and history they had before becoming part of this piece.
Because these vintage materials can never be recreated in exactly the same way, this is a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

はいからさんの一閑張りかごバッグ – Japanese Indigo Blue
日本の藍と、昭和レトロの記憶をひとつの籠に。
和紙を一枚一枚藍染めし、竹籠に幾重にも貼り重ねる、日本の伝統技法「一閑張り」で仕立てたかごバッグです。
深みのある藍色の和紙をベースに、昭和時代のヴィンテージラベルや広告、懐かしいイラストや文字、着物の生地などを自由にコラージュしました。
昔の商品広告やパッケージに描かれた、どこかユーモラスで愛らしい人物や動物、レトロなタイポグラフィ。かつて日本の日常にあった小さなデザインを集め、ひとつのバッグの中に新しい物語として蘇らせています。
正面だけでなく、側面や反対側まで異なる表情を楽しめるデザイン。見る角度によって、さまざまな昭和の記憶が現れます。
藍染めならではの濃淡や色むらも、手仕事だからこそ生まれる一点一点異なる表情です。また、ヴィンテージ素材に残る色褪せや擦れ、経年の跡も、その素材が歩んできた時間の一部として作品に生かしています。
同じヴィンテージ素材を再び揃えることはできないため、世界にひとつだけの一点物です。
